In a letter to the Union Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh Congress demanded CISF security cover for its Punjab leader Navjot Singh Sidhu. In the letter dated November 17 Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that since Sidhu is now a “legislator and a senior cabinet minister of the Congress party as also an outspoken critic of the (Narendra) Modi Government's policies, there seems to be a growing threat perception to his life”.
Surjewala said in his letter that Sidhu, who is a cricketer, an entertainer on television and a political personality, who has been campaigning against the “drug mafia and criminals” in Punjab and because of his “highly visible profile” he has “always been a high-risk target”. However, the Congress said, “there has been a marked escalation in these threats” since Sidhu “left the BJP and joined the Indian National Congress”. Sidhu was a former Member of the Parliament for BJP had quit to join Congress ahead of the Punjab assembly elections in January 2017.
