Republicans’ Report on Benghazi ‘Conspiracy Theory on Steroids’

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The report issued by the Republicans on the US House Benghazi Committee, which looks into the 2012 attack on the US diplomatic compound in Libya, lacks reliable evidence and represents a conspiracy theory, the committee’s Democrats said in a press release on Tuesday.

“The Republican Benghazi report seems like a conspiracy theory on steroids — bringing back long-debunked allegations with no credible evidence whatsoever,” the release stated.

Earlier on Tuesday, Republicans on the Benghazi committee released a report probing the 2012 attack, which killed US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

The House Republicans claimed that the administration of President Barack Obama failed to protect US diplomats on multiple levels. The committee Democrats, however, said the report was not objective.

“Republicans promised a process and report that was fair and bipartisan, but this is exactly the opposite,” the release claimed.

Continuing controversy over the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi reflects the sharp divide between Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress. Republicans accuse the Obama administration of covering up its incompetent response to the attacks, while Democrats view the Benghazi Committee’s work as political theater intended to embarrass the administration.
