Soldiers of the Operation REASSURANCE Land Task Force (LTF) have concluded their training with the Romanian Army in Cincu, Romania, as part of Exercise SCORPION FURY.
During the exercise, which occurred from April 7 to 20, 2016, the Canadians were embedded with Romania’s 20th Infantry Battalion, and conducted platoon-, company- and battalion-level training in both offensive and defensive conventional warfare scenarios.
“It was useful to train with the Romanians, because they got to see our procedures and we got to see theirs,” said Private Samuel Mainville of the 1st Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment (1 R22eR). “We are very good at what we do, but there are variations to techniques that can be good to know. I think it was beneficial for everyone and it was a great experience.”
Working with the 20th Infantry Battalion allowed Canadian soldiers to gain an understanding of the strategies and tactics of the Romanian Army, and vice versa.
During one scenario, the Canadians were accompanied by Romanian observer-controllers as they trekked through valleys and forests, and up steep hills, in order to locate and attack an objective. During another, the Romanians secured one objective and established defensive positions, so that Canadians could pass through their lines and carry on toward a second objective.
Exercise SCORPION FURY also featured force-on-force scenarios during which Canadians and Romanians “fought” each other…
